Today I have to pack my bags for my surfing trip. Time of departure: tomorrow morning at 3 AM, sharp. I’m totally psyched, because I’m in real need of a holiday (who isn’t!). Taking up 3 jobs (kudos to all you double/triple jobbers out there) might have got something to do with it, so I promised myself that I will work on my work-life balance upon my return.
Back to the surfing part, because that’s a first timer. I’m not a good swimmer, I’m always cold, I don’t have any strength in my arms and I’m afraid of sharks and jellyfish. Not that there will be any sharks in Fuerteventura, but you never know!
Maybe I should pack some water wings, just in case… Paddling is apparently also not as easy as it looks and if there is someone who will hit her head against the board, it will be me. I’ll probably be the one you see walking up and down the beach holding a pretty board, looking like a pro, but who you never actually see in action. There’s a whole surfer lingo that I stumbled upon and according to http://www.surfing-waves.com/surf_talk1.htm, I’ll be a real paddlepuss. Word.
For the sake of trying new things, I’m being open-minded about it and just hope that I won’t return with a broken arm, or worse. It feels a bit like the first time I went snowboarding. God, how I suffered, but against all odds it became one of my favorite sports. Don’t be mistaken; I’m still a noob at boarding, but at least there you have après-ski bars that make up for all the pain. I wonder if you have après-surf bars as well..
I also wonder if there’s a list of things that you absolutely need to pack. Anything other than a bikini, sunscreen and a towel. I can always buy all the other stuff there and spend way too much money on a pro outfit that will have to compensate for my below zero skills. Who cares, at least I will look cool. Worst case I can always read one of the many books I bought. Plus I found the perfect Zen place where you can pamper yourself to the best massage on the island. Either way it’s going to be fun. Bye bye bad weather, bye bye stress and hello Fuerteventura! *Humming the Beach Boy’s song*
